Caring Connections - Honesty Survey

April Fools’ Day is all about pulling pranks, bending the truth, and a little bit of harmless deception.

But have you ever wondered which U.S. states are really curious about how to lie? A recent study by the team at SportsMillions sheds some light on the places where dishonesty might be more common than you'd think.

By analyzing over 400 Google search terms related to lying, including phrases like "how to lie," "tips on lying," and even "books on how to lie," the study reveals that some states are particularly interested in honing their skills of deception. From mastering the craft of fibbing to simply learning how to get away with a lie, the findings are as cheeky as they are eye-opening.

While lies may be universal, the frequency with which Americans search for tips on deception varies wildly by state.

1. Vermont (123 searches per 100K)

Vermont might be known for its picturesque landscapes, but it's also the state where the art of deception is at its peak. The state leads the country with 123 searches per 100K residents for tips on lying. Clearly, Vermont residents aren’t afraid to ask, “How do I lie like a pro?”

2. Delaware (116 searches per 100K)

Delaware snags second place with 116 searches per 100K. With searches like "how to lie better" and "how to get away with a lie," it’s clear the state is interested in perfecting the fine art of fibbing. Perhaps Delawareans are just trying to keep up with Vermont!

3. Georgia (111 searches per 100K)

The Peach State might be known for its southern hospitality, but it ranks third in terms of lying inquiries. Georgians are no strangers to looking up how to lie more effectively, with phrases like “how to lie for dummies” and “how to lie like a pro” popping up frequently in search results.

4. North Dakota (110 searches per 100K)

It seems North Dakota residents are on a similar wavelength as their fellow Midwesterners when it comes to seeking advice on dishonesty. Whether it's learning how to tell convincing fibs or perfecting their techniques, North Dakota keeps its residents occupied with the craft of deceit.

5. Utah (108 searches per 100K)

Utah rounds out the top five with a healthy interest in lying, with searches like "how to lie better" and "how to stop lying" cropping up regularly. It’s clear that many in Utah are curious about how to master the art of deception.

6. Rhode Island (107 searches per 100K)

This small state might be known for its coastal charm, but its residents also seem to have a keen interest in tips on how to lie. Whether it’s for personal gain or just curiosity, Rhode Islanders are certainly not strangers to the world of fibbing.

7. Wyoming (106 searches per 100K)

Wyoming might not always make the headlines, but when it comes to lying, the state comes in strong with 106 searches per 100K. Wyoming residents are clearly intrigued by the mechanics of dishonesty.

8. Hawaii (103 searches per 100K)

Hawaii's tropical beauty doesn’t seem to keep its residents from searching for how to deceive. It ranks eighth on the list, proving that even paradise isn’t immune to the lure of a good lie.

9. Maine (96 searches per 100K)

Mainers are typically known for their rugged outdoorsmanship, but they also seem to have a fascination with deception. With 96 searches per 100K, Maine sits just outside the top 10 but still has a significant interest in learning how to lie.

10. New Hampshire (95 searches per 100K)

In New Hampshire, it’s clear that some residents are keen to improve their lying skills. Whether it’s perfecting a harmless fib or learning how to get away with a tall tale, New Hampshire’s ranking shows that truthfulness isn't always the most popular virtue.

On the flip side, California, Texas, Mississippi, Ohio and Florida ranked at the bottom with not so many people looking for those shady tips online. Kudos to these states for their integrity!

Here’s the full list of states and their respective number of searches per 100k residents:

Methodology

To determine which states are the most “dishonest,” the team at SportsMillions analyzed over 400 Google search terms related to lying. These included phrases like "how to lie," "tips on lying," and "how to stop lying." The total number of searches for each term was measured against the population size of each state to calculate the searches per 100K residents.
