I wanted to highlight a new book - Swedish Lagom: Finding Joy in Just Enough by Kortney Yasenka and Karen Johnson Yasenka.
In a world that often glorifies excess, Kortney and Karen's insightful exploration of the Swedish concept of "lagom" offers a refreshing perspective on finding balance and contentment in life."Lagom," meaning "just the right amount," is a philosophy that encourages moderation and mindfulness, and this book beautifully illustrates how embracing this principle can lead to a more fulfilling and joyful existence.
I had a chance to learn more in this interview.
Why did you write this book?
I wrote Swedish Lagom: Finding Joy in Just Enough with my Swedish mother to explore and share the essence of a lifestyle that has brought balance, calm, and contentment to many in Sweden, a lifestyle I was fortunate to grow up with thanks to my mother. Lagom is a Swedish philosophy that embraces balance and “just enough.”
In a world often driven by excess and constant striving, I was inspired by the idea that happiness can come from simplicity, moderation, and personal connection. As a licensed clinical mental health counselor, I saw first-hand the benefits of living lagom and how you don’t need to be born a Swede to incorporate these daily habits into your life. This book is my way of offering a practical and thoughtful guide to embracing a more sustainable, balanced way of living, where less truly can be more. My hope is that readers will discover how to slow down, focus on what truly matters, and find joy in the everyday.
Why can it be helpful to look at models from other cultures when learning about mindfulness and moderation?
Looking at models from other cultures can broaden your perspective and reveal alternative ways of living that you might not encounter in your own environment. Swedish lagom living offers a unique approach to mindfulness and moderation, a model that can inspire you to rethink your habits, challenge cultural norms of excess or overwork, and adopt practices that better support balance, mental health, and sustainable living.
How does the idea of "lagom" contrast with a world that seems to keep moving faster and faster?
When modern life feels like it's moving faster and faster each day, lagom encourages stepping back and appreciating what you already have. It promotes balance, presence, and sustainability over short-term gains. Lagom offers a calming reminder that a more mindful, more purposeful life can lead to greater satisfaction and well-being. Lagom is a powerful reminder that you can find joy in just enough!
