Money Matters - Buy Now Pay Later Survey

Is Buy Now Pay Later a ticking time bomb? The booming payment option shows no signs of slowing down, but is it causing Americans to live beyond their means?

PartnerCentric’s latest survey of over 1,000 Americans reveals that 52% are using BNPL to split payments on everything from groceries to furniture.

The trend is especially pronounced among Gen Z, with 65% planning to increase their use of BNPL in 2025. Electronics, furniture, and home goods are the most common purchases, but 31% are using BNPL for everyday essentials like groceries, too.

  • 35% say they’ll use BNPL more in 2025 to cope with the cost of living.
  • 18% use BNPL to hide large purchases from bank statements.
  • 15% are first-time BNPL users this year.

Despite its popularity, BNPL has its limits. While three in four BNPL users prefer it over credit cards, 27% say they would cut back if BNPL transactions started affecting credit scores. With a decision point averaging $250, BNPL is no longer reserved for big-ticket items, it’s now influencing everyday spending habits.
