Parenting Pointers - Breast Pump Tips from Evenflo

I recently had a chance to interview Amy Peterson, IBCLC, Lactation Consultant for Evenflo, to get some advice for nursing moms.

What do nursing mothers need to look for in a quality pump?

It is important to choose a pump according to how often it will be used. For moms who plan to pump daily, a double electric breast pump that has separate controls for speed and suction is ideal. These settings help the breasts letdown, and then the settings can be adjusted collect milk. Using a double electric pump is particularly important if you need to pump before your milk supply is established.

It is also important to choose a pump that has multiple flange sizes available. The flange is the part of the pump that centers over the nipple. For comfortable pumping and optimal suction, the flange measurement should closely match the width of the nipple base, not including the dark skin around the nipple (areola). Evenflo Feeding has six flange options available, and expert support to help mothers find their best size.

What sets Evenflo apart from other options on the market?

Evenflo Feeding is a trusted brand that has been around for over 100 years. We offer quality products that are affordable for all families. We currently have two double electric pumps: our table top pump is the Advanced Double Electric Breast Pump. It plugs into an electrical outlet or runs on batteries. Just this year we launched our newest pump—the Pocket Breast Pump, which is rechargeable, programmable, and can be clipped to your waistband for on-the-go pumping.

Both the Pocket Breast Pump and the Advanced Double Electric Breast Pump have a closed, hygienic system. They can both be set up for single or double pumping. Both feature separate speed and suction controls, which allows the mom to closely match her baby’s sucking pattern and optimize her milk output. The Pocket Breast Pump has 9 suction levels, 6 speed levels, and 3 memory presets. It is designed to last for up to 20 pumping sessions before needing to be re-charged.

Can you share any helpful tips for nursing mothers who are getting used to using breast pumps?

Pumping should never hurt. A lot of moms mistakenly turn up the suction to pull-out milk—this is NOT how pumping works. It is best to use quick cycles with low suction when pumping begins for one-to-two minutes. This mimics the gentle suck a baby uses to stimulate a letdown. Once milk starts flowing, the suction can be adjusted to as high as is comfortable. This will optimize milk output. Most moms have several letdowns during a feeding, so when milk flow slows, adjust the speed and suction to stimulate another letdown.

You may be surprised at how fast pumping is. Usually, you don’t need to pump for a specific amount of time. Rather, pump just long enough to collect milk for a single feeding. If your baby eats 2 ounces for a feeding, you only need to pump 2 ounces combined from both sides. Also, it’s normal for one breast to make a bit more milk than the other.
