Parenting Pointers - Top Metro Areas for Working Moms

Being a working mom in America – balancing childcare, work, and household tasks – is a tough feat and should come with a cape. So, they put together a study to see which places are making life a little easier for moms trying to have it all.

To this end, they analyzed data across education, work, and health/environment categories, considering metrics like employed moms, work-from-home rates, commute times, income, childcare availability, school quality and cost of living.

Key Findings:

  • National Snapshot: Across the country, about 73% of moms with children under 18 are working, with nearly 17% working from home and about 9% being self-employed. Working moms log an average of 37.5 hours per week, and their typical commute clocks in at just more than 25 minutes each way.
  • Midwest Excellence: Top metros like Minneapolis-St. Paul, Kansas City, MO, Des Moines, IA, and Lansing, MI, shine in affordability, community support, and work-life balance.
  • Northeast Excellence: From Hartford, CT, and Worcester, MA, to Trenton, NJ, the Northeast excels in childcare access, female employment, and flexible work options, benefiting from robust healthcare infrastructure and education systems.
  • Western Standouts: Metros such as Santa Rosa, CA, and Fort Collins, CO, demonstrate high lifestyle quality and access to outdoor spaces, especially in the small metro category.
  • Among large metros, Minneapolis-St. Paul, Washington, D.C. and Kansas City, MO took the first three spots. The mid-sized metros that ranked highest were Portland, ME, Des Moines, IA and Worcester, MA. While among small MSAs Santa Rosa, CA, Lansing, MI, and Fort Collins, CO, took the podium.
