Travel Tidbits - Top 12 Destinations for Shark Sightings and Cage Diving

For adventurous boaters and thrill seekers, shark sightings and cage diving give you a chance to marvel at some of the incredible predators found in the deep sea. Whether you take out your own boat for an up-close encounter or go on a chartered excursion, be sure to always put safety first. Never get in shark-infested waters—whether you’re caged or uncaged—unless under the close supervision of a certified professional who can be responsible for your safety. While there are many amazing places out there to meet these creatures, Boatmart has compiled 12 of the top destinations for shark sightings and cage diving.

1. Beqa Lagoon, Fiji

One of the world’s best destinations for shark diving, Beqa Lagoon is on the small island of Viti Levu in Fiji. The island is home to a variety of shark species in great numbers, and a Shark Reef Marine Reserve that’s dedicated to shark research and conservation. When you take your boat out on the water or go for a dive, you may encounter blacktip, bull, gray, lemon, nurse, silvertip, tiger, or whitetip sharks.

2. Fakarava, French Polynesia

Fakarava (translation: “beautiful”) in French Polynesia’s Tuamotu Islands is famous for its reef sharks that swim in an area that’s part of a UNESCO biosphere reserve. In July during the “Wall of Sharks” phenomenon, the island’s south passage is a feeding ground for gray reef sharks. Cruise around on your boat in these waters and you may also spot hammerhead and tiger sharks.
