Enriching Education - Most Crowded Classrooms

A new study shows public schools have over 22% more students per teacher than private schools, on average. Researchers analyzed student-teacher ratios for public and private schools using data from the National Center for Education Statistics to find the most crowded classrooms in America. They also examined how classroom sizes have evolved over the past 50+ years.

Despite decades of reform efforts, class sizes have remained relatively steady. Public school student-teacher ratios have dropped by 7% in the last 20 years (from 15.8 in 2004 to 14.7 in 2024).

Where are the public-private class size gaps largest? California. Public schools have nearly 48% more students per teacher (about 10.8 more students per teacher) than private schools. Arizona and Massachusetts also show major disparities — over 35% difference in class sizes based on school type.

Where are the most crowded classrooms? Arizona is #1 for public school classrooms (22.69 students/teacher). Nevada is #1 for private school classrooms (15.25).

Where are the least crowded classrooms? Vermont, for public (10.36) and private (7.06).
