At a time when federal funding for public education is at risk of disappearing, Remake Learning is taking the opposite approach: for the first time, the Pittsburgh-based educator network is expanding their Moonshot Grant program to also help fund national innovations.
This year, Remake Learning has invested in 10 bold ideas that will enrich learning ecosystems from Arizona to England. The projects include:
• Leveraging AI to Develop Student-Centered Learning Tools: Next Generation Learning Challenges (Gloucester, MA) will use generative AI to develop student-centered policies, practices, and even on-demand coaching for educators via chatbots that are designed around students’ needs, based on districts’ future-ready “portrait of a graduate”
• Testing Models to Provide Unconventional Learning Credits: Afterschool Alliance will collaborate with multiple Nebraska-based education organizations to test new pathways for students to earn credits toward graduation through afterschool, summer, service learning, career exploration, and workforce development programs
• Growing Who We See as Educators: Education Reimagined (Washington, DC) and Runway Green (Brooklyn, NY) will partner to develop ways to expand regional learning ecosystems by activating the teaching potential that already exists within communities, including non-traditional educators, mentors, and subject matter experts
• Redefining the Relationship between Teachers and Communities: ASU Foundation for a New American University (Tempe, AZ) will create new school-based roles for Community Connectors, pre-service teachers who specialize in strengthening school-community partnerships
“It’s exciting to see people imagining a future where learning is even more engaging, relevant, and accessible for young people. Moonshot Grants help innovators test prototypes whose outcomes may not only benefit their regions but also be replicated in other learning ecosystems across the country or around the world,” said Tyler Samstag, Executive Director at Remake Learning.
Since 2021, Remake Learning has awarded over 50 Moonshot Grants, totaling more than $3.5 million invested in new ideas that have the potential to shape the future of teaching and learning. Support for Moonshot Grants is generously provided by The Grable Foundation, William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, Siegel Family Endowment, Richard King Mellon Foundation, and The Heinz Endowments.
