- West Virginia is the most expensive state to take a shower in, with high water and gas utility rates.
- Hawaii’s electricity cost of $162.66 and gas bill of $210.46 make it the most expensive state for heating water.
- Western states dominate the top 5, with Oregon, Alaska, Hawaii, and Washington all experiencing above-average shower expenses.
Massachusetts was recently named the most expensive state to live comfortably, requiring a single adult to earn over $116K annually, a finding that highlights how rising utility costs are making basic routines like showering more expensive across the country. A new study from Badeloft USA ranks the ten most expensive states for taking a shower, based on typical monthly utility bills and standard usage estimates. The analysis used averages for water (16.8 gallons), electricity (0.35 kWh), gas (0.03 therms), and lighting (0.002 kWh) per 8-minute shower. Costs were calculated by dividing monthly utility bills by average household use—6,000 gallons of water, 900 kWh of electricity, and 50 therms of gas. The total cost includes water, heating, and lighting, using data from EPA, EIA, and utility records.
Findings summed up

West Virginia ranks first for shower costs, with residents paying $108.40 per year on average. This stems from high utility prices: $105/month for water and $107.68/month for gas, some of the highest in the country for both.
Oregon comes in second with an annual shower cost of $88.60. Although its electricity bill is lower at $102.32, water charges of $88 and gas at $70.73 keep it among the most expensive. Compared to West Virginia, Oregonians pay nearly $20 less per year.
Alaska follows in third closely with a yearly cost of $86.47. Its electricity costs are quite high, at $124.66, nearly matching West Virginia’s. Its gas bill, at just $49.42/month, is the lowest among the top 10.
Hawaii comes in fourth, with yearly shower costs at $86.33, nearly identical to Alaska. Its electricity cost at $162.66/month, is the highest of all states analyzed. Despite a low water bill ($64/month), the cost of heating water in Hawaii nearly matches Alaska due to the heavy reliance on electric systems and high energy prices.
Washington ranks fifth with a yearly cost of $79.95. It has moderate utility costs across the board, with $78 for water, $95.72 for electricity, and $73.23 for gas. Its slightly higher water bill compared to Hawaii pushes it just above California in total cost.
California comes in sixth, with annual shower costs at $79.5. It has a higher electricity cost at $116.94 but slightly lower water and gas bills than Washington. These differences keep it just below Washington in overall cost.
Wyoming ranks seventh, with showers costing $75.70 per year. What stands out in this state is its water bill at $74 per month, higher than in Arizona and Nevada, helping push it above those two states in total shower expenses. Its electricity cost is relatively low at $96.59, and gas is also cheaper at $65.59.
New Jersey follows in eighth place with an annual shower cost of $72.88. Its gas price, at $57.79, is the second-lowest in the top ten, just above Alaska’s. Despite this, its electricity rate of $109.54 is higher than Wyoming's.
Arizona comes in ninth at $62.92 per year. While its electricity ($136.70) and gas ($95.94) are among the highest on the list, its water bill stands out as one of the lowest at just $53.
Nevada rounds out the top ten, with annual shower costs at $58.39. Electricity costs $110.36 per month and gas $89.97, both on the higher end nationally. What pulls Nevada to the bottom of the ranking is its extremely low water bill of $50, the cheapest among the top ten states.
A spokesperson from Badeloft USA commented on the study: “Small daily routines like showering become a surprisingly effective lens for viewing broader cost-of-living differences. The data clearly show that utility pricing and not just water usage, plays the biggest role in driving up everyday costs. In states where gas or electricity rates spike, even basic habits can significantly impact household budgets.”
