In her new children’s book, The Recyclosaurus and EggBangers, debut author A R Trent, offers a powerful and imaginative exploration of climate change.
Addressing the topic with a cast of memorable animal characters, the story’s young protagonist, Ed Williams, finds himself lost in LA-LA Forest Park after his school closes due to the extreme sunbaked weather caused by climate change. The book begins: ‘Well, isn’t it winter?’ As the tale unfolds Ed encounters the local wildlife, who, through their distinct personalities, make Ed acutely aware that they hold humans responsible for their widespread starvation and homelessness and the melting of the Antarctic.
Written by an author who worries about what the future holds in prospect for her great-great-great-great grandchildren. She has 4 grandchildren (their feedback on the issue has been woven into the narrative). The Recyclosaurus and EggBangers tackles serious environmental themes through fun adventures and a unique setting, The Recyclosaurus, a place where heated debates about humanity’s role as "super polluters" unfold.
Enthralling her audience (aged 7-11) with rich storytelling and beautiful illustrations, this book has been written to inspire children to ask important questions about pollution, climate change and survival. And while the narrative is a page-turning work of fiction, the foundation of this entertaining and thought-provoking book is to serve as a wake-up call, urging young readers to consider the legacy they will leave for future generations.
Synopsis:
Eons and eons ago, you received the gift of freewill to the one-time offering Seed of "Planet Earth. You turned it into mass evolution with adverse activities. Our ancestors transformed this seed into a fast and furious global climate crisis. The innocent air, land and sea creatures were no longer kept safe by nature. Instead of keeping our world protected you risked a cruel trick, and now our homes are domes. ‘Our inheritance is this?’
The author says:
‘While this book is aimed at children aged 7-11, I don't think age should be a barrier.
I attended the St Ann’s Infant School in Nottingham way back in 1963 aged 5, where the school covered a topic on weather changes in spring. I was on the front cover of the local newspaper watering fresh tulips in a classroom. The Nottingham Evening Post Headline: ‘Well, isn’t it spring?’ It was the first day of spring, which must have felt like a cold, damp and dismal winter’s day.
I've written a story where the air becomes so polluted that future generations live in dome cities, and where all living things—cultures, animals, and birds—share a single common goal: survival. In this future, the outdoors will be a myth. I hope this book can spark important conversations about these serious topics, while still being an engaging and fun read.’
