Enriching Education - Pre-Teen Entrepreneurs Present Compelling Solutions to Global Issues

Students in Brooklyn will present entrepreneurial ideas to the school community during the EXCEL (Excellence in Entrepreneurship and Leadership) program expo, which is set to take place at St. Saviour Catholic Academy at 701 8th Ave. in Brooklyn on Friday August 8 from 10 a.m. to noon.

Leo, a 12-year-old rising eighth grade student created a low-priced self-cleaning water filter to help provide clean water to the 26 percent of people around the world without access to clean water.

Eva, a 13-year-old rising eighth grader is deeply moved by the plight many pets face in warzones, so she is building a social network to identify the most problematic regions and find solutions such as pet adoption and rescue.

Christopher, an 11-year-old rising seventh grader is solving the problem that many new parents have with finding safe playdates for their children with a full, robust social media platform called ToddlerZ that will address this issue through connecting parents and toddlers with safe peers and playmates.

EXCEL is an intensive program designed for middle school students to develop essential skills in public speaking, project and time management, strategic marketing, and research. These young minds are the small business owners, corporate leaders, and startup founders of tomorrow. The students were among six participants who presented their pitches, complete with graphics, tag lines and business plans to a panel of investors and community members.

The program is led by Dean J. Fusto, President of the school, along with Humphrey Tsui, a teacher from the academy. Mr. Fusto has spearheaded these programs over 20 years in the Dominican Republic, Vietnam, China, Africa, Colombia, and the U.S.

In today's fast-paced world, equipping young students with entrepreneurial and leadership skills is crucial,” says Fusto. “The EXCEL program not only prepares them for future success but also fosters creativity, innovation, and confidence. By participating in this program, students gain a competitive edge and are better prepared to navigate the challenges of the modern business landscape.”
