What’s less commonly discussed, however, is the impact pregnancy can have on your hearing. In fact, a new study reveals that around 10% of pregnant individuals experience some degree of hearing loss.

Causes of Hearing Loss Linked to Pregnancy

Hormonal changes

When it comes to why many people experience hearing loss during pregnancy, it’s largely due to hormonal changes. Progesterone, which is essential for maintaining a healthy pregnancy, is around ten times higher. These elevated levels can alter nerve cell activity in the inner ear, which may affect hearing.

High blood pressure

The inner ear is highly sensitive to changes in blood flow, so hearing loss can sometimes be triggered by high blood pressure during pregnancy. That’s why it’s important to speak to your doctor if you notice any changes to your hearing. Elevated blood pressure may indicate preeclampsia, a condition that can lead to serious health complications if left untreated. 

Iron deficiency

Several studies have linked hearing loss to low iron levels. Iron deficiency is common during pregnancy, affecting more than a third (36%) of individuals worldwide, which could help explain why many experience hearing changes while pregnant.

Key Signs of Pregnancy-Related Hearing Loss

Hearing loss during pregnancy is rarely discussed, but here are key signs to watch for beyond just turning up the TV or asking people to repeat themselves:

  • Dizziness and imbalance: Inner ear dysfunction related to hearing loss can cause balance issues or dizziness.
  • Plugged or clogged ears: A sensation of fullness in the ears may also signal hearing changes.
  • Everything seems quieter or muffled: If sounds feel more distant than usual, it could indicate hearing loss.
  • Tinnitus: A ringing, buzzing or humming sound in the ears may indicate pregnancy-related hearing issues, as tinnitus is often associated with hormonal changes. 

How to Take Care of Your Hearing During Pregnancy

Consult with an audiologist

Hearing issues may resolve after giving birth, but for some, they may continue. That’s why it’s important to schedule regular check-ups with an audiologist or healthcare provider, who can monitor your hearing health and address any concerns early on.

Maintain a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle

Make sure that you also maintain a balanced diet and healthy habits during pregnancy. This can help to support overall pregnancy wellness, along with the functionality of your auditory system.

Protect your ears

It’s also important to avoid prolonged exposure to loud environments where possible and use hearing protection like earplugs when needed. Noise-induced hearing loss is absolutely preventable with the right precautions. 

Manage stress

High stress can also have an impact on hearing health, as well as your overall well-being during pregnancy. That’s why it’s important to incorporate stress-reducing activities like yoga, deep breathing, or meditation into your routine where possible.
 

Stay hydrated

Proper hydration supports many essential bodily functions during pregnancy, including the auditory system. Make sure you’re drinking enough fluids throughout the day to support your hearing and overall health.
