Are water bills ruining America’s summer fun? A new study finds that 43% of water bills rise in the summer with an average cost of $111/month. The majority of Americans (60%) are taking measures to cut back–and some are getting creative.
While many will take passive approaches, like reducing lawn watering or only running full dishwasher loads, others are getting extreme:
- 1 in 5 have reused cooking water to water plants
- Nearly 1 in 10 have filled toilet tanks with bricks
- 28% have skipped toilet flushing
The study also found that many summer luxuries, like full-length showers and pools, are worth the high utility bills. Half would rather give up green grass than shorten a shower, and 94% of pool owners refuse to cut back on usage. Further, 66% say rising utility costs haven’t stopped their summer fun.
