Parenting Pointers - Helping Family and Career Thrive

Heather Holmes, founder of Publicity For Good, is a former Miss Ohio International, wife, and mom of three who built her award-winning PR agency from an Airstream in rural North Carolina. Today, she serves 200+ purpose-driven brands while prioritizing family, faith, and mission.

I had a chance to interview her to learn about how she balances parenting and running a company.

Why do you feel the traditional ideas behind women "having it all" miss the mark for many women?

Answer (Heather): The traditional idea of “having it all” suggests women should flawlessly juggle every role at the same time: career, motherhood, home, community, without missing a beat. That image is not only unrealistic, it’s unfair. What actually matters is alignment. For me, “having it all” isn’t about perfection, it’s about living a life where my work, my family, and my values support each other rather than compete.

What are some practical strategies you've used to help both your family and your career thrive?

Answer (Heather): A few simple but powerful strategies have helped me. First, I rely on rhythms instead of rigid schedules; mornings for my kids, afternoons for my agency, evenings for family again. Second, I protect boundaries fiercely: if it doesn’t align with my mission, it’s a no. And third, I lean on support, both at home and with my team. No one thrives trying to do everything alone.

How do your personal values guide you as both CEO and mother?
Answer (Heather): My values are my compass. As a mother, that means raising my children with faith, love, and authenticity. As a CEO, it means running a business that amplifies good, serves brands with purpose, and models integrity. In both roles, I remind myself that my legacy isn’t just what I achieve, it’s how I treat people and the example I leave for my children.

How do you define a "purpose-driven" brand, and why is it important to you to promote them?

Answer (Heather): A purpose-driven brand is one that exists for more than profit, it’s about impact. These brands connect their products or services to a bigger mission: health, sustainability, community, or social good. Promoting them matters to me because PR isn’t just about visibility, it’s about amplifying voices that make the world better. When we elevate these brands, we’re not only helping them grow, we’re helping their mission reach more people.
