Are screens making it harder for kids to fall in love with reading? A new report explores how digital distractions may be chipping away at children’s attention spans and reading stamina. It found that 90% of teachers and parents think increased tablet and smartphone use has decreased interest in reading.
Additional insights include:
- 80% say children have trouble keeping attention on a book from start to finish
- 68% say children are distracted by their devices when reading digitally
- Alternatively, over half (59%) believe digital tools are effective for reluctant readers
Laura Stewart, Chief Academic Officer at 95 Percent Group, expands on the effects of digital reading: “Clearly, digital reading is here to stay, and while it can be a powerful tool for easy access to content, it can also be a distraction, impacting students’ attention and reading stamina and encouraging ‘shallow reading.’”
