Book Nook - Space Ranger Fred

I recently had a chance to interview  Matt Newnham about 5 ways to inspire curiosity in children through science and adventure stories. Mr. Newnham is a British author and storyteller whose vibrant imagination fuels both children’s and adult fiction. With a background in marketing and years spent living in South Africa, he brings a unique blend of creativity and global perspective to his writing—including the award-winning “Space Ranger Fred” series. Space Ranger Fred turns science, technology, engineering, and math into exciting space adventures, helping children learn without feeling like they’re in a classroom.

As the author of the Space Ranger Fred series, I’ve always believed stories should do more than entertain—they should spark imagination, curiosity, and a love of discovery. Here’s why I think science fiction and STEM-focused stories matter so much for children, and how families can nurture that same sense of wonder at home.

Why are science fiction stories such a good launch into a lifetime of curiosity and discovery?

Science fiction opens the door to what if? For children, that question fuels imagination and makes them see the world as full of possibilities. A story about rockets, planets, or strange technology isn’t just fantasy, it gently nudges them to wonder about the real universe. That spark of curiosity often grows with them, becoming a habit of discovery for life.

Why is it important to incorporate STEM concepts in children's literature?

STEM is everywhere in our lives, and the earlier children encounter it in fun and relatable ways, the better. By weaving STEM into adventures, kids see science and technology not as complicated subjects, but as part of exciting stories. It makes learning feel natural and fun, turning what could be intimidating into something inspiring.

How can families encourage a sense of wonder and exploration in kids?

The best way is to celebrate curiosity. Read stories together, ask questions like why and how, and don’t worry about always having the answers. Stargazing, cooking, nature walks, or even building things at home can all spark discovery. Children thrive in an environment where exploration is encouraged, and wonder is shared.

At the heart of Space Ranger Fred is that same spirit, stories that families can enjoy together, sparking conversations, laughter, and those all-important what if questions. Reading side by side, parents and children can share in the adventure while building curiosity that lasts far beyond the final page.
