Book Nook - The Bakery Dragon and the Fairy Cake

The Bakery Dragon and the Fairy Cake by Devin Elle Kurtz (Alfred A. Knopf Books for Young Readers, Ages 4–8) hits shelves on October 7 and follows Ember, first introduced to readers in The Bakery Dragon, on another feel-good adventure as he bakes a new treat (cake!), makes new friends, and learns from his mistakes.

Ember first became a viral sensation when Devin Elle Kurtz shared her artistic preoccupation with dragons in unexpected places with her 847K Instagram followers. In 2024, The Bakery Dragon became an instant Indie and USA Today bestseller, was announced as the overall winner of the 2025 Barnes and Noble Children’s & YA Book Award, and it has taken over globally with translations including Catalan, French, Polish, Spanish, and Thai.

Magic and whimsy shimmer on every page of The Bakery Dragon and the Fairy Cake, reminiscent of the illustrative world-building of Disney, Pixar, and DreamWorks movies. An ideal read-aloud timed perfectly for holiday baking, this story will turn tummy rumbles to belly laughs while also celebrating baked goods, dragons, and perseverance in equal measure.

Don’t miss The Bakery Dragon on tour this October! Full stops and details are available below. Devin is also available for interview – please let me know if you’re interested!

In this follow-up to the instant bestseller, Ember is in charge while the baker takes a trip, and he’s excited to show what he can do. When an opinionated fairy princess swoops in demanding a cake, he eagerly agrees. But the sugar hits the fan when Ember’s first attempt is a complete disaster, and the royal customer is not happy. Everyone told Ember he was such a good baker, so why can’t he get this right? If he doesn’t figure it out soon, the only thing on the menu will be humble pie.
