Enriching Education - Dear New York

A sixth-grade student at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Academy in Astoria, Queens, who wrote a story about his teacher for a local contest finds his winning work being featured in the “Dear New York” exhibit at Grand Central Terminal, which runs through October 19. NYC students were invited to submit a photograph of a person who inspires them, along with a short paragraph describing their positive impact.

Jaxon Hili, a student who wears a hearing aid, focused his story on teacher Jennifer Flores and all the ways that she helps him and his fellow classmates.

“Every student would be lucky to have Miss Flores as a teacher once in their life I’ve been lucky to have her for two years,” he wrote. “Miss Flores never gives up on me. Even when I’m struggling the most, she finds a way to help me succeed. Miss Flores is patient, kind, and understanding. She teaches middle school and knows how to make it fun while making sure we are learning. Miss Flores pushes for all of her students to get the support they deserve. My brother and I wear hearing aids, and she always makes sure that our teachers are wearing their mic devices and shares strategies with other teachers to make sure we feel included in our classes. Miss Flores has taught me the importance of what it means to care for others and be kind. She has taught me to believe in myself and that I am more capable than I sometimes think.”

The "Dear New York" installation at Grand Central Terminal is a photography exhibition by Brandon Stanton, creator of Humans of New York, running from October 6-19. The free, public exhibition features 300 portraits of people who are important to New York City elementary, middle, and high school students, celebrating the community members who quietly keep the city going. In addition to the Grand Central display, 300 selected submissions will be featured in an online gallery at dearnewyork.com.
