New research has revealed the states where your home is most likely to be burglarized, with Nevada ranking ninth.
Commercial general contractors at S-Line Contractors analyzed data from the FBI Crime Data Explorer on the number of residential burglaries in each state that occurred over a 12-month period. They compared these figures to each state’s population to determine the states with the highest average number of monthly burglaries per 100,000 people.

Sam Bitar, a spokesperson for S-Line Contractors, has commented:
“Seven out of the top ten states are in the southern region of the US, suggesting that states here may be at a generally higher risk of residential burglary. Looking at the bottom ten states, where people are least at risk of burglary, many are located in the northeast. This regional difference could be down to a number of different factors, including law enforcement resources, housing types and economic struggles.
“It’s interesting to note which months of the year hold the highest risk of burglary, especially considering the huge variation between states. July seems to be the most common month for residential burglaries nationwide, being the highest risk month in 19 states, while September is generally the safest, being the highest risk month in only one state.
“October is the highest risk month in Illinois, Florida, and Nebraska, so it is advisable for those living in these states to be extra cautious this month.
“Regardless of where your state ranks, it is important to take precautions to protect your home year-round. There are simple steps you can take to reduce the risk of burglary, such as installing visible security cameras, ensuring your door and window locks are strong and secure, and keeping your property well-lit to deter criminals.”

Methodology:
- Data from the FBI Crime Data Explorer was analyzed to determine the number of residential burglaries in each state during each month over the most recently available 12-month period.
- The total number of burglaries over the 12-month period was divided by 12 for each state to calculate the average number of monthly burglaries.
- The average number of monthly burglaries per 100,000 people in each state was then calculated by comparing the burglary data to each state’s population, allowing for fair comparison between states.
- States were ranked in order of highest to lowest average monthly number of burglaries per 100,000 people.
