Award-winning performer, producer, and author Nancy Hays announces the December 1 release of Riding for America — a moving new historical fiction young adult novel and audiobook that brings to life the nearly forgotten story of Isaac Burns Murphy, the winner of four of the first five American Derbies at Washington Park in Chicago, three Kentucky Derbies and the first photo-finish in racing history, a match race between a White and Black rider. Isaac Murphy was also the first jockey inducted into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame, arguably the greatest jockey who ever lived.
Narrated by acclaimed actor Amir Abdullah (Empire, NBC’s Chicago Med, The Odd Couple), the audiobook transforms Murphy’s triumphs and trials into an unforgettable performance that restores him to his rightful place in American history.
“Riding for America isn’t just about racing — it’s about humanity,” said Nancy Hays. “When I first learned about Isaac Burns Murphy and his mother, America, I was deeply moved by their courage and dignity. My goal was to honor them by bringing their story to a new generation with accuracy, sensitivity, and respect. This young adult novel is my way of listening to history — and helping ensure that a true American hero is never forgotten.”
For actor Amir Abdullah, who has narrated more than 66 audiobooks including I Am Not Sidney Poitier by 2025 Pulitzer Prize and 2024 National Book Award recipient Percival Everett, voicing Murphy’s story was a calling.
“When I first read Nancy’s book, I heard more than the rhythm of hooves and crowds,” Abdullah said. “I heard a man’s soul — his faith, his restraint, his pride. Isaac’s story isn't just about a race, it's about reimagining an often glossed over part of African American history and restoring a forgotten legacy of success.”
The Riding for America project continues to grow, with a feature film, stage production, and children’s picture book now in development - all celebrating the same timeless values of courage, integrity, and inclusion.
The novel, which also includes a historical section and student study guide, is available December 1 at Barnes & Noble, Amazon, and other booksellers, with review copies available for press and educational institutions. The audiobook will be available by December 15 on Audible. Advance review copies of the Riding for America audiobook and novel are available upon request. Interviews with Nancy Hays and Amir Abdullah may be arranged through Ann Claire Media.
