Healthy Habits - The Role of Caregivers

As medical guidance and treatment options continue to evolve rapidly, one constant remains clear: caregivers play an essential role in helping patients make informed health decisions.  Experts and families are highlighting how caregivers serve as trusted advocates—helping loved ones navigate complex health systems, process new medical information, and collaborate effectively with care teams.

Pam, an occupational therapist and mother of two children living with cystic fibrosis (CF), embodies this role. When both of her children, Trenton (21) and Marlaina (17), were diagnosed with CF, Pam became an active partner in their medical care—learning to evaluate new treatment options, manage transitions in care, and advocate for her children’s evolving needs.

Pam’s journey demonstrates how caregivers can bridge the gap between patients, providers, and the often-overwhelming flow of health information. Her story reflects the broader experience of caregivers across the country who must make sense of rapidly changing healthcare guidance while ensuring their loved ones receive the best possible support.

“It’s not just about scheduling appointments or managing medications,” Pam shares. “It’s about being part of the conversation—asking questions, weighing new options, and helping your loved one feel confident in their care decisions.”

Now that her children are gaining independence, Pam’s role as a caregiver is shifting again.  With her daughter turning 18 and her son off at college in Hawaii, the ownership and responsibility of their care is firmly in their own hands with Pam serving as their support system. Her experience illustrates how caregiving evolves, and how preparing children to prioritize and manage their health empowers them to navigate this new chapter with confidence.

Joining Pam for interviews is Dr. Paul Mohabir, Pulmonary Critical Care Specialist. Both guests will offer their perspectives on how caregivers can collaborate effectively with medical teams. Together, they’ll discuss the importance of transparent, trust-based communication when evaluating new treatment options and making care decisions for loved ones with chronic or serious health conditions.
