Book Nook - Beautifully Scarred

In her debut memoir Beautifully Scarred, author, singer and speaker Camey Joy shares her true story of being born in the mountains of Guatemala with a bilateral cleft lip and palate so serious that she almost didn’t survive. Camey went through more than 23 reconstructive surgeries in order to live, eat, breathe and develop. While she was grateful for every surgeon who helped her survive, she was still indeed an eternal healer for the pain that was not visible from the outside.

Much of Camey’s childhood was spent in hospitals, moving from operating rooms to recovery rooms where she learned to face the reality of the deep wounds she had. Beautifully Scarred tells the medical side of her story, but it also shows what God restored through His grace, forgiveness and love. “I wasn’t supposed to live. Every surgery, every scar, every breath is proof that God still performs miracles.”

Before Camey was ten, she had already undergone more than twenty surgeries and believed she needed to hide her scars. Over time, as she details in her memoir, she learned that her scars could point to His. As she writes, “Healing did not happen overnight. It came through surrender, forgiveness and letting God redefine what beauty means.”

Camey’s longtime surgeon, Dr. Craig Hobar, Founder of LEAP Global Missions, performed Camey's double jaw surgery, nasal and cheek reconstruction, and final lip surgery at Children's Medical Center of Dallas. “Camey is a beautiful person and a beautiful role model for anyone born with a severe cleft lip and palate.”

“LEAP Global Missions has performed more than 10,000 free surgeries around the world in the past 34 years, the most common of those being cleft related surgeries.” Dr. Hobar continued, “If anyone wants to know how powerful and present God can be in a person's life, don't miss Camey's book and her YouVersion devotional.”

Camey shares a clear message. Healing is not only physical. “The surgeries changed my appearance,” she says. “But redemption changed my life.” Her journey is a moving testament that Jesus still heals, restores and works miracles today.

Her memoir, available on Amazon, along with her five day YouVersion devotional, invites readers to see how God can use every scar, physical or emotional or spiritual, as part of His work in someone's life. Camey hopes her story reminds people that no life is too damaged for God to redeem and that scars can become one of the strongest parts of a testimony.
