Book Nook - Losing the Weight Loss Meds: A 10-Week Playbook for Stopping GLP-1 Medications Without Regaining the Weight

Keeping weight off after taking weight loss meds makes your success truly lasting and life-changing. But it's not easy. There will be obstacles along the way—like holiday meals.

Dr. Holly Wyatt and Dr. Jim Hill—two of the world’s leading experts on long-term weight management—have developed a 10-week transition plan for stopping weight loss meds in the

forthcoming book, Losing the Weight Loss Meds: A 10-Week Playbook for Stopping GLP-1 Medications Without Regaining the Weight (December 16th).

“Maintaining your new weight requires preparation and focus,” says Wyatt and Hill. “It requires a strategy and skills you did not need during weight loss. You can’t simply stop the medication and expect the weight to stay off; unfortunately, that approach usually leads to weight regain. Research shows that most people who discontinue weight loss medication regain a substantial portion of the weight they lost. In one clinical trial, participants regained about two-thirds (66 percent) of their lost weight within a year, with some regaining even more in less time. If you stop the weight loss medication, your weight will eventually rise again too—unless you take other steps to prevent it.”

DR. JIM HILL is a Professor in the Department of Nutrition Sciences at the UAB School of Health Professions and one of the world’s leading experts in obesity. For over 40 years, he has conducted research on the development, health consequences, prevention, and treatment of obesity, publishing more than 700 peer-reviewed papers, reviews, and book chapters. Continuously funded by the NIH since 1981, he currently serves as director and principal investigator of the UAB Nutrition Obesity Research Center (NORC) and previously led the Colorado NORC and the University of Colorado Anschutz Health and Wellness Center.

Dr. Hill co-founded the National Weight Control Registry (NWCR), the premier source of data on long-term weight loss maintenance, and recently co-founded the International Weight Control Registry (IWCR) to study factors affecting obesity treatment success across populations. He has served as an investigator in the Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) and site PI for the Look AHEAD study, and he now leads UAB initiatives in precision nutrition, investigating why individuals respond differently to dietary interventions.

He is the author of two popular weight management books, The Step Diet Book and The State of Slim, and has developed multiple behavioral weight loss programs. He also co-founded America On the Move, a nonprofit promoting sustainable lifestyle adjustments.

Dr. Hill was elected to the National Academy of Medicine in 2018, and has served as president of both The Obesity Society and The American Society for Nutrition. His current research continues to focus on lifestyle factors that influence obesity and long-term health.
