Book Nook - A Reluctant Adventure to a Land of Dragons

-This bold debut YA fantasy by Sophie Cork invites readers 10+ into a world where necromancy, dragons, and sharp-edged humour collide in ways that feel genuinely fresh.

A plot that thrives on surprise, A Reluctant Adventure to a Land of Dragons weaves familiar fantasy elements into something mischievous, heartfelt, and impossible to step away from. Its magic system crackles with originality, and its tone strikes that rare balance between laugh-out-loud chaos and real emotional weight.

With an irresistible clash of personalities at its centre, this story is about a reluctant teen caught between comfort and courage, and a grandmother whose power, audacity, and unapologetic eccentricity reshapes every scene she enters. With this intergenerational partnership bringing depth, friction, and warmth, readers will be drawn into the way these characters grow into themselves, and into each other’s truths.

As themes of sacrifice, legacy, and choosing who you want to become rise to the surface of this tale, Sophie Cork’s novel is inventive and punchy whilst feeling both wildly entertaining and refreshingly sincere.

Synopsis:

Fidra Ignis is a pensioner with a plan: to save all of dragon-kind from an impossibly deadly danger with only her sharp wit, her big heart, and her extremely reluctant grandson who just wants to stay at home and let someone else save the world.

Together, they will make fierce enemies and fiercer friends, rediscover unknown lands, and change the course of the entire world. Or, you know, get immediately thwarted by the sheer impossibility of their mission and go home for tea and biscuits before the day is done.

Either way, it’s going to be a lot of fun!

About the Author:

Sophie Cork is a non-binary demigod living somewhere near London (they do not give out their full address in case anyone wishes to break in and steal their godly powers, which they keep in an ordinary looking bracelet). Their main aim in life is to spread joy to every corner of the world, which is a surprisingly easy task seeing as the world is round, therefore has no corners. They enjoy writing (obviously), but they also have a passion for maths, cross-stitch, and petting their adorable dog.

Sophie has autism and ADHD, something which they describe as “counterproductive” and “a living nightmare when paired together”. At least, this is the excuse they use for having a messy room and no social skills. Lastly, Sophie thoroughly enjoys writing about themselves in the third person, something that they discovered whilst writing this section.
