Travel Tidbits - Safari Tips

Too often, someone misses the most extraordinary moment of their life because they're staring at a screen trying to capture it. So here are some PSAs to get the most out of your safari trip. And check out what Classic Safaris can create for you in Africa.

  1. PUT THE PHONE DOWN- I really mean this. Your Instagram can wait. Just stare and get lost in looking at lioness teaching her cubs to hunt during golden hour, watching a giraffe drink from a water hole, watching elephants spray water at each other with their trunks. You'll see plenty of animals in East Africa but those moments can't be re-created.
  2. WAKE UP EXTRA EARLY AND GO ON THAT MORNING GAME DRIVE- No excuses. Yeah, it may be 5 AM, yeah the bed is comfy, go anyway. The bush at dawn is a completely different world... cooler, quieter, and alive in a totally different way.
  3. BE QUIET- Let silence do its thing. Stop talking. Some of the most profound safari experiences happen in the quiet when you're sitting with an elephant 20 feet away who is crushing and crunching branches. A sound you will never hear again. Embrace it
  4. TRUST YOUR GUIDE- Always. Your guide has forgotten more about the bush than most of us will ever know. When they stop the vehicle and go quiet, go quiet too. When they take a detour, follow without question. The best sightings are never on the map.
  5. LOOK AT THE SMALL THINGS- It's not all about the Big 5. Take note of the woodpecker on the buffalo's back, the termite mound taller than a car- this is the Africa that gets under your skin and never leaves.
  6. GET OUT UNDER THE STARS- You might be tired from the early morning and all the fresh air but there is no sky like a safari sky with zero light pollution and a cold drink in your hand.
