A new national study found that American free time has dropped about 9 percent since 2020, and millennials, the generation raising most school-age kids right now, have less of it than anyone.
Solitaired analyzed the American Time Use Survey from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, comparing daily minutes spent on leisure and obligations in 2020 versus 2024, with sleep excluded. Results were broken out by state, generation, and gender.
Dataset:
- Americans now have under 5 hours of free time a day, about 27 fewer minutes than in 2020
- Millennials have the least of any generation, under 4 hours daily
- Men still get about 43 more free minutes a day than women
- Childcare time rose about 7 percent and interior cleaning about 12 percent
- Nearly 6 in 10 minutes of remaining free time go to a screen
- Time hosting or attending parties jumped about 47 percent, and game playing rose about 6 percent
The squeezed minutes went to the household, not to nothing. Even so, families protected their shared time while solo activities slipped, with reading down 11 percent and walking down 20 percent.
