Caring Causes - Salvation Army Holds Grand Opening of New “Hope Market” Food Shelf in St. Paul

The Salvation Army will celebrate the grand opening of its new Hope Market food shelf on Wednesday, September 30, providing families in St. Paul with a more convenient and dignified way to access the food they need.

Hope Market is a new “super-shelf” designed around a market-style shopping experience. Rather than receiving a predetermined box or bag of food, guests can walk through the food market and select the items that best meet the specific needs and preferences of their households.

“This new food shelf represents an important step forward in how we serve our neighbors,” said Lt. Colonel David Harvey, Salvation Army division commander. “When families are facing difficult circumstances, they should have the opportunity to make choices about the food they take home. Hope Market gives people that choice while creating an experience that respects their dignity and recognizes that every family has different needs.”

The new space also provides more convenient access for individuals and families seeking food assistance at The Salvation Army’s West 7th Street location. Its design reflects a growing emphasis on providing food assistance in ways that are welcoming, accessible and responsive to the people being served.

The Hope Market is being made possible through primary funding from the Otto Bremer Trust, whose philanthropic focus includes helping organizations build stronger families and communities.

The Salvation Army continues to see significant need for food assistance as many households struggle to keep up with the cost of groceries and other basic necessities.

Through Hope Market and its other food programs, The Salvation Army seeks to ensure that individuals and families have access to nutritious food while connecting them with additional resources that can help address the challenges they face.

The Salvation Army Northern Division last year helped 384,000 people overcome poverty, addiction and economic hardship through a range of social services, meeting human needs without discrimination. This year, continued struggles caused by food shortages, inflation, increased energy costs and the threat of eviction have elevated the numbers of those seeking assistance.

By providing food for the hungry, emergency relief for disaster survivors, rehabilitation for those suffering from drug and alcohol abuse, and clothing and shelter for people in need, The Salvation Army Northern Division is #DoingTheMostGood at 85 operation centers in Minnesota and North Dakota.
