Book Nook - Math Doesn't Bite

Did you know that math anxiety can appear in children as early as five years old?

At this age, children are not only developing mathematical skills: they are also forming beliefs about who they are as learners. Repeated frustration can quickly lead a child to believe that they are simply “not a math person”, a belief that may later influence the challenges they take on and even the educational paths they consider.

The good news is that some of the most valuable learning can happen naturally at home, without tutoring, workbooks or additional screen time.

Designed for parents of children ages 5–6, Math Doesn’t Bite is a practical and playful guide that shows families how to find math in everyday life. Counting steps, sharing a snack, comparing shapes or adjusting a recipe can all become opportunities to develop numerical and spatial thinking in a relaxed and enjoyable way.

Based on recent cognitive science research and exploratory workshops with parents and children, the book includes:

  • Dozens of simple, screen-free games, tips and activities
  • Ideas for introducing math through ordinary family moments
  • 15 playful scenarios in which children explore mathematical concepts naturally
  • Practical advice for developing confidence, curiosity and problem-solving skills without pressure

The aim is not for every child to excel at everything, but to ensure that children do not close doors too early because they have decided that math is not for them.

The book was written by Elie Tirman, a 16-year-old high school student with a passion for science and mathematics. It grew out of his workshops and awareness program, created to help parents build positive early experiences with math.

Math Doesn’t Bite is available in English and French:
