Did you know that the average household produces over 200 pounds of kitchen waste each year?
My husband and I compost all of our kitchen scraps (except meat and high-oil foods, which don't break down in the average compost bin and can smell and attract animals). This is one of several contributing factors that allow us to have low-volume garbage service (half the size of the smallest regular option - and we still only fill our can half full most weeks). Not only that, but it gives us nutrient-rich fertilizer for our garden each spring and fall.
Amazon.com sells a stainless steal composter for $37. Mine came with two extra filter sets, and replacement filters are pretty inexpensive. It really doesn't smell at all, except when I open it if it's been to long since I emptied it last. Mold does grow if it's left too long without emptying, but because it's stainless steel, it washes clean easily. It beats taking things back to the compost bin every night, though, especially in the winter!
