At first glance, replacing a toilet doesn't seem very frugal - they cost several hundred dollars. But if you have a toilet made in the 1980s or earlier, it actually only takes about 5 years (less if you have an even older toilet) to make the money back in the form of savings on your water bill.
Some people advocate filling a bottle with pebbles and putting it in the water tank. While that can save water per flush, you do run the risk of increased clogs in older toilets that aren't designed for that kind of low-flow flush.
So, if you have the change and an old toilet, upgrade now for savings down the line!
