Consumer Critique: Baby Einstein World Music

I was asked by Mom Central to review Baby Einstein's new World Music DVD, which will be released on March 31st. There will also be a world music CD.

As a musician, married to a music major, I strongly value the importance of introducing kids to music - in whatever way fits your family best. Baby Einstein World Music is one way to do this. The DVD is designed to be viewed with your baby or toddler, so that you can interact with your child as he or she views the screen. The DVD is just over a half an hour, divided into 5-10 minute segments, and includes Spanish and French languages. There are engaging puppet shows and a variety of cultural music from around the world, such as African drums, maracas, Celtic harps, traditional dances, and more.

One of my biggest issues with Baby Einstein music is that I strongly prefer "real" music, and some of the CDs use synthesized sounds. But the World Music DVD does a good job of introducing the authentic sounds of instruments and music from a variety of cultures. The visuals are engaging, and certain to keep any toddler or young child in tune with what's going on. My daughter picks up on the beat she hears very quickly and sways and dances and spins, especially when she sees dancing on the TV.

The CD and DVD can be pre-ordered now from the Baby Einstein website or Amazon.com.
