Thrifty Thinking: Spa Treatments

Here are a variety of natural treatments with inexpensive ingredients to help improve your appearance.

Sour cream - use as a moisturizing face mask and exfoliant by smoothing a few spoonfuls of cool full-fat sour cream over your face and neck (wash your face first). About 10 minutes later, remove with a wet washcloth, splash with warm water, and dry.

Chamomile tea - use as a calming compress to reduce inflammation and redness by soaking a washcloth in cool camomile tea, then rest on your skin for 10 minutes. Rinse and dry.

Almond oil - use as a hand moisturizer by rubbing a teaspoon into hands and cuticles. Wrap hands with a towel or washcloth for 5 minutes. Don't rinse hands, allowing remaining oil to absorb.

Pineapple - use as a foot rub by pureeing one cup of fresh pineapple. Massage into feet to help sften callouses. 10 minutes later, rinse with warm water and dry.

Kiwi - use as a facial scrub by mashing kiwi flesh with a fork. Scrub flesh into your skin with circular motions for 30-90 seconds, then rinse with warm water and dry.

Olive oil - use as a hair conditioner by combing 2-4 tablespoons (depending on length) of light olive oil into your hair from roots to ends. Cover with a shower cap and begin your shower. 5-7 minutes later, shampoo, rinse, and condition as normal.
