Consumer Critique: Align Digestive Care

I've been asked to review a new product from Proctor & Gamble called Align Digestive Care.

"Align is the #1 gastroenterologist recommended probiotic and it contains Bifidobacterium infantis 35624 (Bifantis), which is clinically proven to help build and maintain an ongoing natural defense against the five signs of episodic digestive imbalance – constipation, diarrhea, urgency, gas and bloating."

It's a pretty strong claim, but they are also up front that it has not yet been evaluated by the FDA. Since I do not have digestive issues myself, I had to rely on a friend to test and report to me. Although the first few days didn't seem to show any improvement (in fact, she felt slightly worse, but this is something warned about on the website), but after that there was a noticeable reduction in constipation and gas.

Probiotics are the same things found in many yogurts. Basically it helps promote the good bacteria in your intestines. Many times doctors will recommend yogurt after taking antibiotics, to help re-regulate the digestive system.

To get the full benefit, P&G recommends signing up for My Align Advisor, which will give you tips on what to expect and ways to maintain and improve digestive health.

P&G is partnering with Ashley Koff, RD (who has worked with a variety of celebrities to help promote health) to launch My Digestive Makeover, an essay contest with the grand prize of a trip for two to fly to California and attend the People's Choice Awards, as well as have a personal consultation with Ashley Koff.

You can buy Align at Walgreens, Wal-mart, Drugstore.com, and other stores and websites. It is typically $25-30 for a 4-week supply. One person will be able to win a box of Align as part of the June giveaway, so keep your eyes out for that.
