I've been asked to review the site Oxfam America Unwrapped. This is a great site to check out if you like giving to humanitarian causes, especially international ones - and if you're trying to have a more socially-conscious holiday season, it does provide gift possibilities, along with a strong sense of altruism.
The idea is simple. You donate to the site, and designate where your gift goes. You can give gifts along a variety of themes: education (books, uniforms, supplies), women and children (toys, school meals, women-owned businesses), essentials, and animals used for food or as part of a business.
Oxfam is unique in that they are a secular organization that accepts no government support - meaning that they are free to make their own decisions about what they do and what statements they make. Many other aid organizations are either somewhat politically constrained due to government support, or are faith-based. Personally, I like the faith-based aspect of other organizations, but not everyone does, so it's good to have a secular possibility as well.
There's a huge variety of gifts that can be given, to help projects all over the world. If you're looking for a charity gift this year, consider Oxfam.
