PSA: Buzzed Driving

Are you counting on the luck of the Irish for safe driving on St. Patrick's Day after going out to celebrate? Rely on sober driving instead. Last year on St. Patrick's Day, 37 percent of the drivers and motorcyclists involved in fatal crashes had a blood alcohol content (BAC) of .08 or above, according to statistics by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

If you're going to go out and celebrate, be sure to designate a driver who will stay completely sober, or make plans for bus or taxi rides home. Some cities sponsor free bus rides on holidays like St. Patrick's Day, so check if that's an option.

Even if you're sober, keep your eyes out. Last year, 1,119 non-impaired vehicle occupants were killed in alcohol-related crashes as well. And remember that you don’t have to be “drunk” to be too impaired to drive safely. Even a few drinks can impair driving…and buzzed driving can have the same deadly consequences and drunk driving.
