Time Tidbits: Conquering Clutter Excuses

Do you know you need to clear things out, but you just can't bring yourself to do it? Here are some common excuses and ways to combat them so you can make progress on getting things organized.

I don't have time. - It doesn't have to take a long time to clutter. In fact, it's easier if you just set an amount of time per week or day that works for you - even 10-15 minutes focused on the task can help.
I hate to throw it away. - No one says you have to throw away things you get rid of. Local thrift shops would be happy to take things in good condition. In MN charities like the Vietnam Vets of America and the Lupus Foundation come and pick up donations and they take a huge amount of stuff. You can also list things on Craigslist or Freecycle.
I might need it. - Then put it in a box and set it aside. After a set period of time (6 months to a year) anything you haven't used from the box gets donated. If you really need something after that, you can probably borrow it from a friend anyway!
_____ gave me that. or That's from when ____, or I can't replace that. (such as handmade gifts) - Nostalgia is a powerful reason why we hang on to things. You can take a picture of items you want to remember, but don't use. Then find someone who will appreciate it. The giver would probably be happier that the item is being put to good use instead of just sitting in a box somewhere. Create a scrapbook if you want to save small items like programs or tickets, and keep up with it. It doesn't have to be fancy - just sliding items in a binder keeps it organized without taking up space.
