Vacation Destination: Virginia Beach

Do you want to go someplace different, but don't want a spot that might be overcrowded like Disney World? Located four hours southeast of Washington, DC, Virginia beach has a lot to offer just about any traveler.

If you're looking to travel with kids, there is a lot to do. First of all, all three beaches are free to visit. Each one has a little bit different personality. The resort area beach boasts a boardwalk and street performers, Sandbridge is a little more secluded, and Chesapeake Bay provides a great location convenient to those also visiting First Landing State Park. There are over 4,000 acres worth of parks with plenty of outdoor activities possible. You can go camping, which is often a low-cost alternative to staying in a hotel - False Cape State Park has very secluded hike-in sites, and First Landing State Park provides the benefits of camping in nature, with the possibility of staying in a hotel so you don't have to bring a tent with you. If the weather takes a turn for the worse, kids can burn off steam playing laser tag or climbing in the rock gym, or have a fun educational experience at the Virginia Aquarium and Marine Science Center, the
Contemporary Art Center of Virginia, or Young Chefs Academy®.

If you want a romantic getaway, Virginia Beach has a lot to offer you as well. Of course there's walking along the beach at sunset or when it's lit by just the moon and the stars. If you like music, there are a lot of outdoor concert venues that offer free entertainment. Like any major city, you can take in cultural events or nightlife like comedy clubs, nightclubs, ballets, plays, and concerts. My personal choice if I went there would be a couples massage at an oceanfront spa.

If history is your thing, you'll want to check out First Landing State Park, the Francis Land House (a 200-year-old plantation), the lighthouse, the military and history tours at various attractions, or some of the other historic sites. Besides the State Park, nature lovers can also visit the Atlantic Wildfowl Heritage Museum.

Virginia Beach could also be a great option for a destination wedding. It's just as beautiful as some more exotic locations, but less expensive (and easier to travel to). Plus, Virginia Beach has many business that comply with Virginia Green, a program to encourage eco-friendly tourism.

No matter what you like to do on vacation, you can find it at Virginia Beach!
