Parenting Pointers: Family Photos

Many people choose to take family photos this time of year, especially if they're going to do photo Christmas cards. We like to do photo cards, but can't always get a true family photo. We have 2- and 4-year-old very active girls so it can be difficult to get everyone even looking at the camera, let alone smiling.

With that in mind, here are my tips for making it successful:
1) Time it right. Right after naptime is a good time. Pick a time your child is normally active, not crabby. It's easier to harness energy and capture real-life shots than it is to spark smiles in grumpy kids.
2) If you're doing a self-portrait, use a wireless remote. Remotes are easier to control timing and take multiple shots than a camera timer, and wireless means that you can easily hide it.
3) Don't focus on "picture perfect." Instead, focus on realistic. Does your toddler have a cheesy grin? Is your baby smiling, but her hair is out of place? Did your park photo mean that everyone has fuzzy hair? Just go with it!
4) Photoshop is your friend:) If you have a friend or family member that has a photo-editing tool, take several photos in rapid succession and stitch together the best smiles from the bunch. If no one you know has photo software, consider Google's free Picasa.

Once you've got your family photo taken, don't use it just for the standard Christmas cards. Consider photo gifts for family members and close friends too! This is especially great if you don't have any concrete ideas and don't want to get them something they already have. It's a personal gift - and it helps them treasure you.

Shutterfly wants to help your family photo be successful with Shutterfly Family Photo Days. These days are designed to help you plan and create the best family photo possible while it's still early enough to get photo cards before years end. Some of the great features available include options for house parties or Meetup, Facebook, a digital toolkit, and contests and other promotions!
