Website Spotlight: Reading Eggs

A couple of months ago, I did a free trial for a website called Reading Eggs. Reading Eggs has two parts: Reading Eggs, and Reading Eggspress for those who are already able to read simple chapter books. This review will focus on Reading Eggs, since I Have a 4-year-old and that's all she's done.

The site is easy to use. First, your child starts by taking a reading test that stops after three questions are missed. My daughter has taken the test twice, and both times it didn't accurately place her, but it was no fault of the program. The first time, she got impatient and clicked an answer before the question was done. The second time, she was resting her hand on the laptop mousepad, so it triggered wrong answers when she wasn't even trying to. So I highly recommend using a "real" mouse for that part.

The games are fun, and my daughter really enjoys playing them. She gets a lot of phonics-based games, and definitely has her favorites, but if I encourage her to try something different, she almost always likes that too. Kids can earn golden eggs, which always excites my daughter, and have a variety of activities to choose from: race car reading tests, arcade games (that cost eggs to play), a shop, and more.

It's affiliated with another great website, too - StudyIsland. Our school uses Study Island to help build students' math skills, and it's another great tool for learners of all levels in elementary and high school.

Reading Eggs costs $75 a year, which really is not a bad price, considering the value you get. You can also purchase book packs designed to go along with certain levels, so you have some non-computer-based learning and literacy tools too.

Disclosure: I received a 3-month subscription to Reading Eggs to facilitate this review.
