Consumer Critique: Sans Sucre

Kids - and parents - often love sweet foods, but we know too much sugar is bad for them. On average, an adolescent consumes 34 teaspoons of sugar, or 500 calories worth each day. Most parents don't want to resort to artificial sweeteners, and sometimes sugar-free products just don't taste as good.

Sans Sucre, meaning “sugar free” in French, produces a line of guilt-free baking mixes in four varieties: Chocolate Fudge Brownie, Classic Blondie Brownie, Milk Chocolate Brownie, Apple Cinnamon Coffee Cake. The mixes use Stevia as a sweetener, which provides significantly fewer calories than regular sugar while still being a natural sweetener.

The mix I tried - Apple Cinnamon Coffee Cake - was very easy to use, and tasty. It called for applesauce and a topping of sugar free caramel. Using applesauce in cakes gives it a moist texture that I love. I opted not to drizzle caramel over the top, and the cake was plenty sweet for my whole family. It felt like eating dessert for breakfast - which we basically were, but this had less sugar than many breakfast options.

Sans Sucre can be bought at a variety of stores, including Kroger, Walgreens, and Whole Foods. For specific stores located near you, use the Sans Sucre Where to Buy page. You can also find Sans Sucre at Amazon.com.

Disclosure: I received a complimentary Sans Sucre mix to facilitate this review.
