I was on the yearbook committee in high school. When I think of how much yearbooks have changed from then to now, it's amazing. When I did them, we actually had to manually mark the cropping on photos, and manually mark the layouts. We could do things on computer, but we still had to manually label and mail in the photos and layout sketches. When the first all-digital layouts came out, they were still pretty labor-intensive - and expensive! But now, you can get a photo yearbook for as low as $5 per book for your school (schools need to contact Shutterfly to get a quote). You aren't getting a cheaply made book, either, and you won't have to deal with hard-to-use software. You can use the easy templates, or create your own look. The books are printed in color and professionally bound - plus, you can re-order anytime, since the book is saved forever.
If you've ever made a photo book at Shutterfly, you know that it's a pretty easy process. I know that for me, making a photo book is way easier than those old yearbook cropping tools and trying to get the pictures to all line up in the squares right! I've been happy with the quality of all the Shutterfly products I've gotten in the past, too, so if you're unhappy with the price of your school's yearbook, or if you're involved with creating the yearbook and you think it's a terribly time-consuming process, contact Shutterfly to see if they can help you with a better solution.
