For the last decade or so, it seems your life has been a
blur of dance recitals, football practices, and carpools with the neighborhood
kids. You opted to stay at home for the first few years of motherhood to get
more time with your kiddos. But now they're at a point where their schedules
are full between extra-curricular activities and school and you find yourself
with a little free time.
As you start entertaining ways to fill your time, you
entertain the idea of going back to school. Whether pursuing a bachelors,
masters or simply looking to take a couple of classes in a field of interest,
there's no denying that moms are hitting the books more and more. With the
number of nontraditional students only growing—a story that ran in the Harvard
Magazine last year cited that more than two-fifths of students fit the
title—it’s obvious that moms make up some of that demographic.
But is going back to school the best decision for you and
your family? Below are some things to consider before making that decision.
Assess
Your Financial Situation
For some moms, going back to school is simply a step they
must take before re-immersing themselves in the working world, and, generally,
more education means a higher salary. Although this isn't a guarantee, the
expense doled out to go back is more of an investment in your family's
financial future—and that's never a bad idea.
However, moms must be honest with themselves about their
financial situations. With the constantly rising cost of living coupled with
their children's impending college tuition and fees, some just can't afford the
expense. If that sounds like your situation, investigate options such as grants
and scholarships, as well as alternatives such as online education. There is a
wealth of information available on the subject—you just have to want to find
it.
Is Your
Partner's Job Secure?
Similar to the previous section, it's important to consider
whether or not your partner's job is secure. For the past few years, your
significant other has been bringing home the bacon, and before you bring on
additional debt and expenses it's important to know if you all will be able to
afford it for the foreseeable future. If the job security that was there is no
longer, there's a real possibility that you may have to go back to the office
rather than the classroom, so it's a smart idea to know that before making any decisions.
Do You
Feel Like Something's Missing?
If finances are in order and you still aren't sure, you
should ask yourself if you feel like something's missing. If going back to
school to pursue your passion will make you happier and more fulfilled, go for
it. Now, this is certainly not meant to discount the happiness and joy you get
from your family—but developing as an individual is an important part of life.
Ensuring you are happy and content will only make you a better mom, as you will
be living to your full potential—plus it will set the example for your children
that chasing their dreams and following their hearts is a smart way to live.
