Healthy Habits: Reasons to Get More Sleep


Sleep. It’s one of those things that harried moms only daydream about, revisiting the distant memory of what it’s like to get a full night’s sleep as their minds wander while rushing to and from soccer practice or as they’re washing the dishes. However there are some pretty compelling reasons why you should be making more time for some extra hours of shuteye each night.
1.     It helps you manage stress better. Being well-rested helps busy moms manage stress better than when they’re running around on empty fumes. Lack of sleep, on the other hand, lends it way to frayed nerves and increased impatience, meaning you’re much more likely to snap at your kiddos when you’re sleep-deprived then when you’re well-rested.

2.     It helps you think more clearly. Sleepy brains tend to wander, making it hard to focus on the task at hand when you’re busy. When you’re all caught up on your sleep, however, you’ll find that you focus better, are able to rationally think through situations more quickly, and that you’re able to make decisions faster without hemming and hawing over something with indecisiveness. This is imperative for moms who need to be quick on their feet.

3.     It helps curb mindless snacking. Lack of sleep is one of the main motivators behind grabbing that second or third snack in the afternoon, as many people default to eating when they find that they’re hitting that afternoon slump. Getting enough sleep helps you stay away from snacking when you aren’t hungry.

4.     It gives you more energy. While busy moms may be masters at running around on only a few hours of sleep each night, getting seven to eight hours guarantees that you’ll have a lot more energy to keep up with the kids every day.

5.     It contributes to overall health. Getting enough shuteye every night not only helps curb mindless snacking and contributes to higher energy levels, but it also helps fight off any illnesses and enhances your body’s natural defenses. These are all essential to helping you keep up with the little ones.
While sleep may seem like a luxury that you can’t afford, you may want to rethink that and skip another early morning wake-up call to do yet another load of laundry. The benefits of getting enough sleep each night far outweigh pulling another load out of the dryer before the rest of the family wakes up. So let yourself get a little extra time spent snoozing, your body and mind will thank you.
