Parenting Pointers: Buying Flowers in Season (Guest Post)

Buying flowers that are in season is recommended because not only are they much more affordable, they are also healthier and look better because nature’s on their side! Importing flowers from a different country because they aren’t in season in your own may make sense if the occasion is special enough to warrant it.
However, when you weigh in the costs and benefits, it always makes more sense to buy flowers according to the seasons, ranging from practical reasons supporting the choice such as availability and affordability to more aesthetic reasons such as the flowers being delivered fresh, looking more vibrant and lasting much longer.
Whether you want to grow your own flowers, or simply make smart buying decisions, learning about the growing season in your region can be very useful. We all have a vague idea about the climatic conditions of the place we live in and with a little extra knowledge; you can enjoy beautiful, fresh flowers all years round.
If you live in a warm place, consider yourself lucky because flowers grow well and more frequently in warm climates. Warmer climates have longer growing cycles and support a wider variety of flowers. If you live in a cold place, don’t lose heart just yet. It is true that the growing cycle is much smaller, but nature adapts, and cold places have some gorgeous cold-resistant flower varieties to boast of.
The best person to advise you would be your local florist. It is the florist’s business to understand what grows well in the region, what is worth importing and splurging on and what can be given a miss.
If you like to buy flowers regularly, inform your local florist and request him to keep you updated about the seasonal flowers that come in. it is also important to ask for flowers that are locally grown, because importing or transporting flowers can increase their price exponentially. If you are looking for greater variety, you can also ask to see flowers that are being brought in from other parts of the country as well. These will cost more than the locally grown blooms but less than the internationally imported ones.
When you’re decorating your home or taking a bouquet along for a close friend, instead of buying a couple of different varieties choose one seasonal flower that you like and buy it in a large quantity. A vase full of the same kind of flowers can look gorgeous too: you don’t always have to put together a mixed bunch for it to look impressive! In fact, a huge bouquet of one flower variety, balanced with some baby’s breath and some small greenery can look gorgeous too.
To learn more about seasonal flowers and find great deals, locate a farmers’ market in your city. Almost every locality has a farmers’ market or bazaar that sells fresh, farm-grown produce and flowers. The prices cannot be beat, the varieties and options are stunning and you’ll get a chance to interact directly with the people who’ve grown the flowers instead of having to work with a middleman.
A farmers’ market can also be a really great place to get some gardening tips and pick up some seeds and bulbs if you want to give growing flowers a try yourself!
Take care of the seasonal flowers you buy to make the most of them. Change the water every day and add a little flower food to the container daily to keep your flowers healthy and strong. Trim any dead foliage and snip the stalks at the bottom at an angle to facilitate better water and nutrients absorption!
