Happiness is a big deal. And it seems like a lot of people - even people very close to me - could use a bigger measure of happiness. I have one friend who excels at finding the joy in everything, even a flooded basement or orthodontist bill. She's got it. I have a lot of friends that are generally happy - and I think many people are - as long as good things are happening. But what happens when we lose what makes us happy? If happiness for you is playing with your kids, what happens when they're sick? Or if your work is happiness, what happens if you lose your job?
The point of this book isn't to make people pessimistic about life, but to distinguish between short-lived happiness based on an event, and long-term happiness based on (spoiler alert!) faith in God. The unique point of this book is its focus on the Old Testament story of Joseph. Encouraging readers to look at life from God's perspective, not ours, the author pushes us to a deeper understanding of what true happiness really is.
Even if you think you're pretty happy, you can learn something from this book. And if you're pretty pessimistic, you just might find something to brighten your outlook. I liked it - it's not a book about being happy-go-lucky all the time, but in finding a deeper joy.
