Fun Freetime: Summer Learning Day

Disclosure: I received complimentary products to facilitate this post. All opinions are my own.

Friday, June 21 is National Summer Learning Day, an advocacy day recognized to spread awareness about the importance of summer learning. National Summer Learning Day is a great reminder that educational fun and activities don’t need to be left at home. As a teacher, I see the effects of summer slide every year - you can give your kid an edge by helping prevent it.
PBS KIDS’ fun, educational apps, based off of several of their popular series, are a great way to help curb the “Summer Slide” and keep kids learning all summer long on convenient mobile devices.
  • Kids ages 3 and up can practice math skills with Dinosaur Train Classic in the Jurassic, Jr.! ($1.99 – iPad) by building bridges and balancing dinosaur food on a scale.
  • Super Why ABC Adventures ($3.99 – iOS, Nook, Kindle, Android) allows kids anges 3+ to watch and sing-along with four alphabet themed music videos that include all twenty-six letters!
  • How do elephants stay cool and clean? Kids ages 4 and up can become animal experts with Wild Kratts Creature Power ($2.99 – iPhone & iPod Touch). Join the Kratts brothers for fun with science and creativity!
  • What is better than a free app? How about improving kids ages 6+ vocabulary, reading, AND math skills with The Electric Company Party Game (FREE – iPad, Kindle, Android, Nook)! Perfect for a summer play date – this game can be played with as many as 12 players.
  •  Parents need summer fun too! Check out PBS Parents Play & Learn (FREE – iOS, Nook, Kindle, Android) – PBS KIDS’ first app specifically designed for parents providing more than a dozen games parents can play with their kids, each themed around a familiar location.
I tried out the last three apps. My older daughter likes The Electric Company Party Game and they both love Wild Kratts! The PBS Parents app doesn't have much for kids, but does have a lot of great ideas for parents to make everyday activities educational without forcing the issue. Check the apps out to help give your kids some educational fun.
