Healthy Habits: Asthma Awareness

Did you know that about 1 in 10 children in the U.S. suffer from asthma and boys are more likely than girls to have the condition? Asthma has been identified as one of the country’s most common and costly illnesses, costing the U.S. about $56 billion in medical costs, lost school and work days! About 25 million people have asthma in the U.S., and the numbers are increasing every year. Because of these statistics, The Will Rogers Institute, a nonprofit organization dedicated to educating the public on topics of health and fitness, has teamed up with Emmy® Award winning actor Bryan Cranston to release a public service announcement that highlights the danger signs and health risks associated with asthma. Best known for his role as Walter White in the AMC drama series Breaking Bad, Cranston is passionate about good health and understands how debilitating asthma can be for children and adults trying to maintain a healthy and active life. In the PSA Cranston explains the importance of proper diagnosis and treatment. Some simple signs of asthma to look out for include:

・         Difficulty breathing
・         Wheezing, coughing
・         Shortness of breath

Take notice of these signs and symptoms and determine whether it’s appropriate to talk to your child’s doctor about asthma.
