Summer
is right around the corner and you, like many others, may want to shed
the winter weight and show off a beach body. So you research the latest
and greatest diet, sign up for a gym membership, and even start buying
healthier groceries.
But like so many Americans, you fall off the wagon a week or two in.
Expert diet physician and founder of the KeDiet Dr.
Oliver Pietro says this is a common problem
among people trying to lose weight. “Most people don’t realize losing
weight doesn’t happen overnight. It is a lifestyle change, and many
people become discouraged and fall back into their old ways,” says Dr.
Pietro. While losing weight may seem daunting,
Dr. Pietro lists three factors to consider to keep you dedicated to
your diet.
1. Take directions from a doctor
For
almost every other health goal for your body, you see a doctor. Yet
most dieters rely on products they see on commercials and in store
aisles and don’t seek guidance from a physician specializing in weight
loss medicine (bariatrician).
2. Letting too much weight accumulate before deciding to do something about it
We gain 1 lb. per
year from ages 18-70 unless we do something to reverse this inevitable
trend. In other words, don't wait until you’re 40 and expect to lose
20-25 lbs. easily.
Understand that losing weight is a lifestyle change that will take time.
3. Try and lose weight as a family, with your spouse or partner or as a group.
It
is harder for one person to diet if others in the household don't.
Similar eating habits cause similar weight gain or weight loss. Dieting
as a couple or family can also help fuel a competitive atmosphere, further
pushing individuals to lose weight.
