Consumer Critique: Toxin Toxout

Disclosure: I received complimentary products to facilitate this post. All opinions are my own.

TOXIN TOXOUT: Getting Harmful Chemicals Out of Our Bodies and Our World by Bruce Lourie and Rick Smith, is a new book about the toxins that are present in so many products (over 80,000 in common products like makeup, cleaners, and hygiene products). Chronic exposure to many of the chemicals hasn't exactly been tested - we are the labs in the crazy long-term experience. Exposure to harmful chemicals can lead to conditions like heart disease, infertility and cancer, and no one knows exactly what the long-term effects are.

In a previous bestselling book, Slow Death by Rubber Duck, Lourie and Smith looked at minimizing exposure. This book looks at how to get toxins out of our bodies. It's actually fun to read about all the cleanses and treatments they go through, all supposedly ways to clean out our bodies. The nice thing with this book is that instead of just saying things work, they take a measurable marker to use as evidence.

At times the book can get just a little too science-y for some people, but overall it's well-written and clearly explained. It was also nice to see what exactly was happening in some of the processes, like chelation, which I had heard the name before but had no idea how it was supposed to work. If you're concerned in the most effective ways to get environmental toxins out of your body, it's a good resource that explores a lot of what's out there.
