Healthy Habits: You Be the Influence

The possible consequences of unprotected sex are clear. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report that there are nearly 20 million new sexually transmitted infections in the US each year and that 50% of all pregnancies are unintended. Condoms are still the easiest and most effective way to protect against both.
The American Sexual Health Association’s new “You Be the Influence” campaign seeks to educate young women that they cannot “rely on the guy” to supply a condom for use during sex.
It is well known that alcohol can reduce our ability to make good decisions, including when it comes to sex. Drinking can lead to risky sexual behavior, like sex without a condom. But sex “under the influence” can still be safe—if you’re prepared.  ASHA seeks to encourage young women to protect their sexual health, regardless of the influence of alcohol. The message is simple: “You Be the Influence” by buying, carrying and demanding condoms.

You can always make the choice to protect your sexual health, and you should be prepared to do so by having condoms available whenever you need them.
